--? WHAT IS MFAS? ?--
MFAS stands for Midwest Filipino American Summit which is a student-lead conference that promotes growth among Filipino, Filipino-American, & Asian-American communities. MFAS brings an opportunity for the those in the Midwest to unite together for the purpose of educating those on identity, issues, culture and ways to become effective leaders in their respective communities.
This year, the theme for MFAS 2019 is "MAKISALI"
“Makisali” - Tagalog. v., inf. To participate; to join in; to take part in.
We often think of ourselves as individuals. We try our hardest to find our identity, and what makes us different from the seven billion people in this world. College students do this too, especially those applying for graduate schools, or trying to find a full-time job. We were taught that to succeed, we had to find what makes us stand out from all others.
However, there can be strength in numbers. Like in nature, looking at the way small fish gather in the millions to survive, or even overpower predators; the way penguins huddle to prevent freezing to death in the antarctic environment; or even the way ants assemble to create an entire colony, each unit having an importance.
In a similar way, we can also help each other succeed. By joining together, we can learn from each other, guide each other, and support each other. Even though we all come from different schools, in different states, we are all part of the Midwest Association of Filipino Americans.
Through MFAS, we hope to create a sense of family and togetherness, and the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Filipinos in Alliance welcomes everybody to take part in this. Makisali kayo, and take part in this year’s MFAS!
